The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.
AFSP organizes hundreds of events in communities across the country, raising millions of dollars each year to support their work, both locally and nationally. Members advocate for social change, supporting policies that contribute to reducing and preventing suicides nationwide. AFSP is the leading private supporter of suicide research. The organization has funded almost $20 million in scientific investigations on the causes and prevention of suicide, and the treatment of those at risk for suicide. They continue to fund new studies into the genetic, neurobiological and behavioral factors that contribute to suicide, and into testing interventions aimed at reducing suicidal behavior and suicide deaths.
